Season Ends with Good Effort in Two Early Tournament Exits
The HCYP Liberty Red summer tournament team ended the season by splitting (1-1) during Pool Play and losing in their first game in the Championship Play during both of their last two tournaments - the MidAtlantic Recreation Open (July 17-18) and the Howard County Summer Sizzler (July 31-August 1).

In the MidAtlantic Classic, Liberty Red lost to the Arlington Sage (5-1) but bounced back to defeat the Fire & Ice 13U team (7-5). In the first round of Championship Play Liberty Red was defeated by Leesburg Revolution (10-2). Amanda Caldas and Amanda Petersen accounted for the only 2 hits in the game against the Sage. Courtney Doyle led the team with 2 hits against the Fire & Ice. Becky Schwab recorded 2 of the teams 4 hits in the loss against the Leesburg Revolution.

In the Howard County Summer Sizzler, Liberty Red got off to a sizzling start defeating the Ashburn Pride (7-2) thanks to a strong pitching performance from Mary Arsenault who limited the Pride to 2 runs on her way to striking out 8 batters. The second game was a close contest with the Liberty Red team generating a comeback - after falling behind 8-4 - that left them one run short in an 8-7 loss to the Red Raiders. In a disappointing final game of the tournament - and the season - the Liberty Red team could not get their offense going until late in the game against a determined LT Lazers team who had already lost both of their games in Pool Play. The LT Lazers came out on top 7-5, despite 2 for 2 performances and 2 RBI's each from Amanda Petersen and Kathryn Diaz. Diaz also recorded her second triple of the weekend.

Liberty Red sported a strong pitching staff of 5 players this season. Hanna McKown led the team in innings pitched (22 2/3 innings) and strikeouts (25). Mary Arsenault allowed the fewest walks (.938 per inning) and fewest runs (.938 per inning). Despite a disappointing .266 team batting average, there were several players who excelled offensively. Lead-off hitter Lindsey Humphrey led the team in runs scored (13), stolen bases (8), and tied with Amanda Petersen for the most hits (10). Kathryn Diaz led the team in RBI's (9) and with a .652 slugging percentage, joining Anna Sutherland as the only players with 3 extra-base hits. Heidi Larsen collected 10 bases-on-balls. Amanda Petersen led the team in batting average at a .417 clip.
